Just six years after making his first team debut in 1966, Mills was made Ipswich captain by legendary boss Sir Bobby Robson. He proudly wore the armband at Portman Road from 1971 to 1982.

His two main career highlights as the Blues captain were lifting the FA Cup in 1978 after beating Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley Stadium, and just three years later he held aloft the coveted UEFA Cup, after a wonderful two-legged victory over AZ Alkmaar.

Full back Mills also represented England for a decade between 1972 and 1982, collecting 42 caps under Sir Alf Ramsey, Don Revie and Ron Greenwood. He captained the Three Lions at the 1982 World Cup Finals in Spain.

Between 1978 and 1982 Ipswich Town were one of English football’s best sides, playing a wonderful brand of attacking football. During that spell they didn’t finish outside the Top 5 in the top flight.

Mills was capable of playing equally well at left or right back, frequently switching flanks for club and country. During a 22-year professional career he netted 33 goals at club level.

After leaving Ipswich Town the defender represented Southampton and Stoke City. He picked up a third Division One runners-up medal of his career with the Saints in 1984.

Mills also managed Stoke City, Colchester United and Birmingham City after hanging up his boots as a player.

The iconic defender was awarded an MBE for services to football in the 1984 New Year’s Honour’s list.
