Osvaldo Cesar Ardiles was born on August 3, 1952 in Bell Ville, Cordoba Province in Argentina. As a boy, Ardiles played football in the streets and was nicknamed Pitón (python) by his brother because of his snake-like dribbling skills.

He began his professional career in Argentina with Instituto de Cordoba, playing also for Club Atletico Belgrano and Huracan and in 1978 he won the World Cup with Argentina.

He moved to Tottenham Hotspur after the World Cup, alongside fellow Argentinian Ricky Villa. The pair were the first high-profile foreigners to make their mark on the English game.

In 1980-81 he was a key player in the Spurs team that won the FA Cup, beating Manchester City 3-2 in a replay. He also picked up an FA Cup winners medal a year later. However, he did not play in the final, as he had returned home after the semi-final to be part of the Argentina World Cup squad.

After a time spent out on loan at Paris Saint-German due to the Falklands War between Britain and Argentina, he returned to Spurs. In 1984 he was part of the team that won the UEFA Cup over two legs against Anderlecht.

He later played for Blackburn Rovers, QPR and Swindon Town.

Ossie won 63 caps for Argentina.
